About the Brisbane Chapter
The Brisbane Chapter serves as the headquarters of the Basava Samiti of Asia Pacific Ltd (BSAPAC) and embodies a unique blend of innovation, divergent thinking, and the pursuit of an egalitarian society where individuals support and uplift one another. Known for its culturally and linguistically diverse members, this Chapter has been pivotal in shaping the charity’s progress, playing a central role in the establishment of BSAPAC’s head office. Since June 2021, the Brisbane Chapter has been an unincorporated member of Basava Samiti of Asia Pacific Ltd, fostering a vibrant community of inclusivity and growth.
Contributions and Innovation
For decades, the Brisbane Chapter has gained a sterling reputation for its tireless service to Guru Basava, thanks to its small but highly effective team. Each event hosted by the Chapter stands out for its innovation and goes the extra mile—ensuring memorable experiences for all participants.
The team formulated the Vachana Utsava competition and implemented a robust financial banking framework to support the operations of a large-scale charity of this magnitude. Additionally, the Chapter offers governance, administration, website development and legal services to the charity.
The 2016 7th International Sharana Samskruti Convention was a notable milestone, where the Chapter successfully organised nearly fifty delegates from India to attend this significant global event. The Chapter’s cultural richness extends to its exceptional talent in music, dance, and theatre, where both young and seasoned artists have performed to the tunes of Vachanas.
Unity in Diversity
The Brisbane Chapter is a testament to unity in diversity, with many members from non-Indian speaking backgrounds contributing passionately to the Chapter’s growth. This diverse involvement has led to the staging of dramas showcasing the lives of various sharanas, performed in both Kannada and English, demonstrating the Chapter’s commitment to making Basava’s philosophy accessible to all.
Brisbane and Cairns Chapter Soft Launch
26th March 2022
The soft launch marked a significant step for BSAPAC with the virtual swearing-in of Mrs. Shashikala Movnachar as the first president of the Brisbane Chapter, along with presidents from Cairns, New Zealand, and Adelaide. This international virtual event was graced by Poojya Swamiji His Holiness Dr. Shri Basava Marulasidda Swamiji and featured prominent speakers, such as Mr. Prabhuling Mahagaonkar from Kalburgi, India.
The event saw wide participation from India, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and the USA, with multilingual vachana recitations being a key highlight. This celebration emphasised cultural integration by encouraging participants to express themselves in their mother tongues.
Educational Initiatives: Vachana Jyothi and Vachana ShravaNa
A 2020 public survey highlighted a growing need for value-based education for children in Brisbane, which led to the creation of the Vachana Jyothi program. This initiative imparts Basava’s teachings to young Australians through a combination of literature study, values discussion, and the promotion of ethical living. Additionally, the Vachana ShravaNa program has become the most popular event of the Brisbane Chapter, where discussions and debates on vachanas mirror a parliamentary approach to exploring ethical and moral values. Rooted in the philosophy’s centuries-old commitment to critical thinking and scholarly exchange, these debates foster a community environment where participants are encouraged to challenge ideas constructively, presenting well-reasoned arguments. The blend of history and modern relevance makes the debates iconic, attracting thought leaders, academics, and public figures from around the world. Their format promotes deep engagement with pressing ethical issues, ensuring that diverse perspectives are explored in detail. This emphasis on reasoned discourse has made the Vachana ShravaNa program a leading platform for examining modern ethical issues and advancing intellectual dialogue.
